what to do
there's no shortage of amusements in new york city. this is just a short list, especially for out-of-towners, of some of our personal favorites.

brooklyn academy of music. one of the borough's signature cultural organizations (and not strictly a music venue). the weekend of our wedding, BAM will be presenting sider, a new modern dance piece; and, dig this, the sweet science suite: a scientific soul music honoring of muhammad ali.

museum of modern art. another of our favorite nyc institutions, right in the heart of midtown manhattan. in addition to their permanent collection and american modern: hopper to o'keeffe exhibition, families can enjoy eyes and ears: art and the senses on saturday morning (oct 12) for free.

if modern art's your bag and you want to go even more insider (and budget-friendlier) than MoMA, get lost in chelsea's famed gallery district, one of the epicenters of the contemporary art world. start with the gagosian, matthew marks, barbara gladstone, david zwirner, and/or zach feuer galleries; from there, wander back and forth along eighteenth and twenty-eighth streets, between tenth and eleventh avenues, to your eye's content. these few blocks are rife with gallery after scintillating gallery, and admission to virtually all of them is free.

carnegie hall. new york's greatest concert hall, if you can figure out how to get there. valery gergiev conducts the mariinsky orchestra on friday night (oct 11).

the village vanguard. another of new york's prime spots to hear music. the birthplace of such classic jazz records as live at the village vanguard, live at the village vanguard, and sunday at the village vanguard.

walk the brooklyn bridge. this 1.13-mile-long new york city icon offers great views of the statue of liberty and the lower manhattan skyline. another terrific cost-free activity. here's how/where to start your walk.

where to eat & drink
again, no shortage of excellent restaurant options–just a few personal recommendations...

barbès. the park slope bar and indie concert venue where karen and patrick had their first drink together.

stonehome wine bar and restaurant. site of our second drink together; right in our neighborhood in brooklyn, and a five-minute walk from BAM; a great spot for a pre- or post-show glass (and good food too).

or, if you're in that neighborhood, we also like the fish tacos at pequeña, the tapas at olea, and–if it's on your nyc checklist–the cheesecake at junior's.

grimaldi's pizzeria. brooklyn's, if not all of new york city's, most famous pizza joint. delicious coal-fired brick oven pizza, right under the brooklyn bridge. they don't take reservations. you'll wait in a line that stretches around the block to get in. you won't regret it.

  1. It turns out we don't know Queens all that well; all of these recommendations will take you to Brooklyn and Manhattan. If you would like to share your own recommendations of things to do and places to eat closer to the Foundry–or, for that matter, any other part of NYC–or if you want to connect with other guests and suggest rendezvous points and plans for the weekend, please post a comment! We'll leave this thread up through the weekend of the wedding.
